Certificate Examples: 8 Types With Sample Text and What to Include

A good certificate example has six parts: a title, the recipient's name, the reason it was given, the organization that issued it, the date, and a signature or verification mark. Below are eight common certificate types, each with sample text you can adapt and a short list of what to include.

Eight common certificate types side by side, each with a short sample line: completion, achievement, participation, appreciation, attendance, excellence, internship, and training

If you only need ready-made phrasing, start with our guide to certificate wording examples. This page shows how the wording fits into a complete certificate.

What Every Certificate Example Has in Common

Part What it does Example
Title Names the type of certificate Certificate of Completion
Recipient Identifies who earned it [Recipient Name]
Reason States what was done for completing Digital Marketing Basics
Issuer Shows who is vouching for it [Organization Name]
Date Fixes when it was issued 4 October 2026
Signature or QR code Makes it credible and checkable Signature line or verification QR

Everything else on a certificate, such as the border, logo, and colours, is design. These six parts are what make it a certificate.

1. Certificate of Completion Example

Certificate of Completion This certifies that [Recipient Name] has successfully completed [Course Title], a [X]-hour program delivered by [Organization], on [Date].

Include: the course title, the number of hours if it is a fixed program, and the completion date. For more variations, see certificate of completion wording.

2. Certificate of Achievement Example

Certificate of Achievement Presented to [Recipient Name] in recognition of outstanding performance in [Competition or Program], achieving [Result or Rank].

Include: the specific result. "Achievement" works best when the reader can see what was achieved. The certificate of achievement guide covers this in more depth.

3. Certificate of Participation Example

Certificate of Participation This certificate is awarded to [Recipient Name] for active participation in [Event Name], held on [Date].

Include: the event name and date. A participation certificate confirms involvement, not a ranking. Read whether a certificate of participation counts as an award if you are unsure which type fits.

4. Certificate of Appreciation Example

Certificate of Appreciation In sincere appreciation of [Recipient Name]'s generous contribution to [Project or Event]. Your time and effort made a real difference.

Include: the specific contribution, so the thanks sounds personal. See certificate of appreciation wording for more than thirty samples.

5. Certificate of Attendance Example

Certificate of Attendance This is to certify that [Recipient Name] attended [Session or Conference Name] on [Date(s)], totalling [X] hours.

Include: the dates and hours, which are the details a record or employer will check. More samples are in certificate of attendance sample and wording.

6. Certificate of Excellence Example

Certificate of Excellence Awarded to [Recipient Name] for excellence in [Field or Role], demonstrated through [Specific Result or Behaviour].

Include: one concrete reason. Excellence certificates lose value when they could apply to anyone. The certificate of excellence guide explains how to keep them meaningful.

7. Internship Certificate Example

Internship Completion Certificate This is to certify that [Recipient Name] completed an internship as [Role] in the [Department] at [Company] from [Start Date] to [End Date].

Include: the role, the department, and exact dates. Students use this document for jobs and further study. See internship certificate vs completion vs experience certificate for the differences, or issue them in bulk with internship completion certificates.

8. Training Certificate Example

Training Certificate This certifies that [Recipient Name] has completed [X] hours of training in [Topic], conducted by [Organization] on [Date].

Include: the topic, the hours, and the trainer or organization. If the training must be renewed, add a validity date. For fields that matter in regulated settings, read who can issue a training certificate.

How to Pick the Right Example

Your situation Use this type
Someone finished a course or program Completion
Someone won, ranked, or met a standard Achievement
Someone took part in an event or contest Participation
You want to thank a volunteer, speaker, or sponsor Appreciation
People sat through a session and you need proof Attendance
Someone stood out in their work Excellence
A student finished an internship Internship
Staff or learners finished a training Training

If two types seem to fit, choose the one that describes only what is true. A completion certificate should not imply a grade, and a participation certificate should not imply a win.

Common Problems With Certificate Examples

  • Placeholders left in. Check that no "[Name]" or "[Date]" survives into a sent certificate.
  • Misspelled names. Names are the most visible text on the page. Copy them from the source list instead of retyping them.
  • No date or issuer. Without these, a certificate looks unfinished and is hard to verify.
  • Vague reasons. "For participation" says little. Name the event or course.
  • Too much text. If a sentence needs a second line, shorten it.

Turn an Example Into a Batch

Once you have chosen an example, the work is mostly repeating it for every recipient. Put the changing parts in spreadsheet columns, such as name, course, and date, and keep the wording fixed. Our guide to sending certificates in bulk walks through the steps, and best certificate templates for any occasion helps you choose a design.
